FORMAT A HARD DRIVE

To format any disk or partition in windows other than the boot drive ( C: drive usually) simply open "my computer" and right click on the drive letter and select "format". Select quick and hit start.

To format the boot drive you will have to either reinstall the operating system or create a boot disk and restart the computer with it in the drive. This will start the PC in Dos. At the A:\ prompt type CD C: to switch to the C drive. Then type "FORMAT C: \S" Now name the drive.

One thing to keep in mind is that just because you formatted the drive does not mean the information is gone. All the info is still there, just the location on the disk where it was saved is erased. Some software can recover files from erased drives such as File Scavenger keep this in mind, that private information may still remain, when discarding old drives. For complete drive erasure see Removing Private Data.
