CLEANING THE CASE
Why does my computer sound funny! Because the fans in the case are probably dirty. An extremely dirty PC can also shut down unexpectedly due to heat issues and reduce the life of your computer. Every 6 months you should unhook the computer and give it a thorough cleaning, If your case is in a room with carpets or pets then every 3 months.
Warning-Static electricity can ruin your computer.
Begin by unhooking the cords and take the PC to a location where it will be easy to work on and the dust won't be a problem (like the garage).
- Unplug the power - For your safety
- Take off the side panels and the front if possible.
- If there is a lot of dirt you may be tempted to use a small vacuum to suck out the dust but this is not a good idea as it creates a lot of static.
- Using a can of compressed air blow out the dust from the power supply then the inside of the case, paying special attention to the fans. Canned air can be purchased at any department store (Wal-Mart) or computer store. Canned air does not create static.
- Next reassemble and test it out. You more than likely will notice a difference in the noise level.
But don't forget the other components of your PC. Again UNPLUG FIRST.
- Monitor- Use a cloth dampened with water. Do not use chemical cleaners as it may damage the coating on the screen
- Keyboard- Blow out the key area with canned air then scrub the surface with a damp cloth
- Mouse- If it's old and has a ball on the bottom, take it out and clean with rubbing alcohol or soapy water, Optical mice just require a surface cleaning with a damp cloth
- Printer- Clean the nozzles by printing a test page or running a cleaning cycle weekly.
- Scanner- Clean the glass with Windex then dry with a paper towel or lint free cloth .
